Jake tends to settle conflicts through peaceful negotiations, as he has had experience as a lawyer before the apocalypse. He is also quite brave, willing to go to speak with Qaletaqa Walker face to face despite knowing the risks and is confident in his abilities. He manages to get Walker to agree to a parley. Jake is also shown to be selfless, willing to be the hostage in the tribute and hostage swap before Alicia decides to be it. However, Jake's peaceful ways are usually seen as too risky, as Madison and Troy save Alicia, messing up the hostage swap. Madison tells Jake he is being played by Walker. Even after this, Jake goes by himself to reason with Walker, though this leads him to get beaten.
