Having the same issue.
The workaround I found is, go to the last number you want to follow, say it's 32 and you wanted to insert the number 33... at the end of the paragraph of 32 click 'Enter' to bring up the 33.
Type or paste your text after the 33.
Then copy and paste the whole paragraph box (which includes the new 33) and paste it where needed in the document.
