Ghana begun the issuing of a national identity card for Ghanaian citizens in 1973.[22]However, the project was discontinued three years later due to problems with logistics and lack of financial support. This was the first time the idea of national identification systems in the form of the Ghana Card arose in the country.[22] Full implementation of the Ghana Cards begun from 2006.[23] According to the National Identification Authority, over 15 million Ghanaians have been registered for the Ghana card by September 2020.[24]
