In the mid-season finale episode, Shane, frustrated with the groups hesitancy, opens the barn where Hershel had been harboring the zombies. After having shot and killed all of the zombies who come through the doors, the group are dismayed and shell-shocked by little Sophia walking through the doors as a zombie. Rick, using every fiber in his body is forced to aim a gun at her and put her out of her misery.
