Mario and company end up in Shyville, and learn that a mysterious object crashed into the Whirled West Canyon recently. Upon leaving town, the group are robbed by a Bandit. Sheriff Shyler and Deputy Sheriff Shyres arrive at the scene, check if Mario and his partner are okay and rush off to capture the criminal. Mario follows, and after a dead end, he heads back and is ambushed by the same Bandit, who he defeats. Shyler locks up the criminal, and when Goombeverly asks if they have seen the Chrome Star anywhere, he brings out the Orange Chrome Star, and is happy to give it to Mario since he beat the Bandit. However, upon giving to Mario, the cell holding the notorious criminal gang, The Bandits Three bursts open, and the group steal the Chrome Star off Mario's hands. Shyler joins as a member of the party to work with Mario in capturing the thieves. Mario, with Shyler's abiility to shoot background objects, gets farther in the Whirled West canyon and captures two of the gang, and upon return, their leader, Banderson reveals himself, and after a failed escape, attack Mario and are defeated. In attempt to flee, the three hijack a Choomba Train. Mario pursues, and is successful in capturing them once and for all. Loving the adventures with Mario, Shyler pledges to join Mario on his quest, and the Orange Chrome Star is acquired.
