If the work has to be done on remote computers, that's the way to go. Otherwise, I suggest Virtual machines. Virtualized machines that run on your local computer (or a server). You can launch as many as you want, run them hidden and they don't interfere with anything else you're doing. It's a learning curve that requires some understanding of networking too, but it's well worth it.
