As the war economy defined the world by 2014, Otacon developed Metal Gear Mk. II. The Mk. II is a remote mobile terminal designed for stealth scouting and communication rather than combat. Regular Metal Gears still saw use, but were largely eclipsed by pseudo-Metal Gear walkers called Gekko.
