Apple switched from PPC to Intel starting in 2006, when Tiger was the current OS. They released Leopard for both PPC and Intel. Snow Leopard was Intel-only, but included Rosetta 1 to run many OS X/PPC apps. My Late 2009 iMac came with Snow Leopard, which was the current OS until July 2011.
