In 2010, Panama began officially registering migrant crossings. From 2010 through 2014, Panama averaged fewer than 2,500 crossings per year. The first real peak of people crossing through the Darin Gap took place in 2015 and 2016 with roughly 30,000 registered arrivals each of those two years. Those crossings were mainly by Cubans and Haitians, Panamanian data shows, followed by nationals of other countries in Africa and Asia.[12] Between 2010 and 2019, more than 109,000 people crossed.
